SIMON MAIDMENT, Sam Design Ltd., London
"The original tambour chair (Simon's original chair design inspired his "Roll-top collection" for Offi) was designed in response to a childhood memory. As a kid I never really understood the concept of tidying or clearing up. I thought that all my toys in one pile in one place was the solution, even if that was the middle of the room. The chair is a place for things to be stored as well as a seat. The nature of the storage and the way it is revealed affords it a secret quality, allowing kids a hiding place for their stuff.
"The baby tambour chair has been on show with Vitra Design Museum, as part of their Kid Size exhibition, since 1998. In this time it has been shown throughout Europe, Japan, and North America."
