ANDREA VALENTINI , Rhode Island
Andrea Valentini grew up in Providence, Rhode Island. She was raised by second generation Italian immigrants; her mother a domesticated artist and her father a carpenter. Her parents exposed her to an old school mentality and a hands-on approach to work ethic. Aspiring to become an artist and a designer since she was eight, Andrea was influenced by her surroundings and never lost sight of her dream of attending the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). In 1995, Andrea graduated from RISD with both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Interior Architecture.
Upon graduating, Andrea established an interior architectural firm and was recognized for her award-winning interiors which included customizing every aspect of her interiors- from furniture to lighting. As an extension of her successful career as an interior architect, Andrea developed furniture and furnishings from unconventional materials such as polyurethanes and polyethylenes. In 2000, Andrea launched her first furniture collection at the Providence Fine Furnishing Show. Then in 2001, at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), her critically-acclaimed "Coosh" egg chair won Interior Design Magazine's Future Furniture Award. It was also nominated by the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum for their 2003 Best Product Design Award. Later in 2003, she was one of 80 American designers chosen to represent the vitality of American design by the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design's Triennial "Inside Design Now" 2003. In 2004, she created her signature textile, "Bump," and launched it into origami cushion covers for Studio Gaia's W Hotel in Seoul Korea. In 2005, New York City's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) asked her to design a computer bag using her innovative "Bump" fabric. In 2007, Andrea used her signature textiles to launch her first signature collection of lifestyle handbags for women and men. In addition, Andrea also created a line of jewelry entitled "DNA." It has grown into an extended collection of urban, classic and trend jewelry collections. In 2009, Andrea opened her first flagship showroom in Providence, RI.
Andrea's inspiration begins with materials drawn from industrial environments. Her innovation stems from her sensitivity to the natural characteristics that exist within these materials which she then transforms (through up-cycling) into new products for various uses. Her process is very improvisational. It evolves through the integration of time, place and availability of materials. Andrea designs her products to be complete works of art that are utilitarian enough for everyday use.
Andrea Valentini has mastered all facets of design ranging from architecture and interior furnishings to apparel, jewelry, and accessories encompassing function and adornment. By mixing materials like Italian calf leather and industrial contract fabrics, Andrea bridges the gap between industries to create products transcend the worlds of fashion and architecture.
